Why These Stories Matter
The world has never had a shortage of stories about heroes.
My novels are filled with action, suspense, and high-stakes adventure. But beneath every mission and every battle lie ideas that, in my opinion, are far more important: courage tested by adversity, the reality of evil, and the sacrifices required to protect the innocent.
The JD Cordell Universe was born from a belief in those ideas.
Running through these stories are also the enduring threads of family, hope, faith, redemption, and the belief that, even in humanity’s darkest moments, good is still worth fighting for.
It is my hope that readers finish each book not only entertained, but also reminded that character matters, integrity still has value, and that one person’s willingness to stand up for others can change a life forever.
As our culture increasingly fills our screens with stories of superheroes, what has become harder to find are stories about ordinary men and women who simply choose to stand between evil and the innocent—not because they are fearless or perfect, but because they understand that some things are simply worth protecting… and perhaps even worth dying for.

I was born in New York’s Mohawk Valley and grew up in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts, where forests, mountains, and small towns became my playground long before I ever imagined writing novels. Nearly every summer was spent in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, camping, hiking, fishing, canoeing, and learning that the outdoors could be both breathtakingly beautiful and completely unforgiving.
After graduating from high school, my family relocated to East Tennessee, where I enlisted in the United States Army. Military service expanded the lessons I had begun learning years earlier, from field training in the United States and overseas to graduating from the Jungle Warfare School at Fort Sherman, Panama. Those experiences reinforced a truth that has guided me ever since: preparation matters, character matters, and strength carries a responsibility to protect others.
That philosophy continued to shape my life. Over the decades, I earned degrees in political science and cybersecurity, graduated from Executive Security International’s Executive Protection Program, and spent more than forty-five years practicing and teaching martial arts and personal defense.
Today, those experiences shape every JD Cordell novel. While the stories are fiction, the values behind them are real: courage, sacrifice, family, faith, redemption, and the belief that ordinary people can choose to stand between evil and the innocent.
My Journey
Looking back, I can see that the values woven throughout the JD Cordell Universe didn’t simply appear one day. They were shaped over a lifetime of experiences, beginning with two people who probably never imagined they were helping create a novelist.
My parents, Curtiss and Adris Gilbert, believed children learned best by doing. I went on my first camping trip when I was just six months old. Hiking, camping, canoeing, using an axe, working with dogs, shooting, and hunting weren’t occasional adventures—they were simply part of growing up.
Those experiences taught lessons long before I had words for them. Self-reliance. Responsibility. Respect for nature. Quiet confidence. The importance of being prepared. Looking back, I realize they were teaching me far more than outdoor skills. They were helping shape the way I would eventually see the world.
As the years passed, those early lessons were reinforced in different ways. Scouting, military service, decades of martial arts training, executive protection, cybersecurity, and years spent teaching others each added another layer to my understanding of courage, responsibility, and service.
One lesson remained constant through every chapter of that journey: strength carries responsibility, and its greatest purpose is to protect others.
That belief eventually became the foundation of the JD Cordell Universe.
Behind the Books
Every writer draws inspiration from somewhere. Mine comes from a lifetime spent outdoors, in uniform, on the training floor, working beside remarkable people and extraordinary dogs, and learning that the greatest strength is often found in those who quietly choose to protect others.
Long before I wrote about the Adirondacks, I learned to love wild places. The outdoors taught patience, awareness, and respect—qualities that became as important to JD Cordell as his military training.
Working dogs are more than companions. They are partners, protectors, and family members. Ajax and Sophie were inspired by the remarkable dogs I’ve known throughout my life.
More than four decades of martial arts taught me that true strength begins with humility, discipline, and self-control.
Military service taught me that courage, sacrifice, and leadership are choices made every day. Those lessons continue to shape every JD Cordell story.
Family is the heart of the JD Cordell Universe. The strongest bonds are forged through loyalty, sacrifice, and standing together when it matters most.
History provides the foundation for every adventure. Real places, real conflicts, and real events help create stories that feel authentic and believable.
The JD Cordell Universe
The JD Cordell Universe is built around men and women who step forward when others are in danger—soldiers, physicians, intelligence professionals, family members, and ordinary people forced to make extraordinary choices.
At its center is JD Cordell, a former Navy SEAL whose greatest strength is not his ability to fight, but his willingness to stand between evil and the innocent. Across battlefields, cities, jungles, and wilderness, the stories explore courage, loyalty, sacrifice, redemption, and the cost of protecting others.
